Ali Cherri: How I Am Monument
Secession, 12 Friedrichstraße
Ali Cherri’s “How I Am Monument” explores violence, history, and the legacy of colonialism through films, sculptures, and installations. His work challenges Western narratives of cultural value and emphasizes the fractured nature of history, drawing on his experience of the Lebanese Civil War. A key piece, “Tree of Life” (2024), blends ancient symbolism with contemporary reflections on hope and creation. Cherri engages with materials like mud and bronze to question power dynamics, while highlighting the destruction of monuments as acts of resistance. His three-channel video installation “Of Men and Gods and Mud” (2022) reflects on displacement, ecological destruction, and the rebuilding of a new world from the ruins of the past.
