Babette Mangolte: I = Eye
Curated by Luca Lo Pinto, the exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien traces the ouvre of Babette Mangolte (US citizen, born in France 1941), an iconic figure of the international experimental film.
“I = Eye” deals with the artist’s perception of performance, on her investigations into medium-specificity. The exhibition showcases a wide range of works from early cinematic and experimental films to her documentary photography of the theater, dance, and performance of the avant-garde New York scene in the 1970s. In addition, two remastered historical site-specific installations feature, as well as recent projects.
Born in Paris in 1941, Babette studied cinematography before moving to New York in 1970. She is also professor at the Visual Arts Faculty at UC San Diego, and essayist.
