June Crespo: Danzante

Secession, 12 Friedrichstraße

“Danzante” is an exhibition of new and recent works by June Crespo, developed in collaboration with the Vienna Secession, the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, and MO.CO. Montpellier Contemporain. Her sculptural assemblages, which she describes as communicating vessels, resonate within the body, alternating between delicacy and force while always maintaining a vital quality.

The formal vocabulary of many works derives from the iris and the strelitzia, though Crespo does not seek representation. Instead, these motifs serve as entry points into an exploration of materiality and the evocative power of surfaces and textures. She positions herself not as an authority but as an assistant to her work, offering a visceral experience of fragmented presence.

Choreography within the exhibition space is central. Sculptures respond to weight, proportion and suspension, forging associations between body and architecture, flesh and stone. Casts and moulds of organic elements made in steel, bronze or concrete through 3D scans are combined with found textiles, industrial elements and personal apparel. These juxtapositions introduce tensions between the organic and the technical, reflecting on post-industrial impact on nature while suggesting reparative gestures.

Works such as Molar (2024), intertwining bronze, steel and fabric, or The Dancing Column II (2025), with two concrete strelitzias resting on a cushion, exemplify her intuitive method. TW, TG 2025 III (2025), constructed from lorry tarpaulins and pipes, recalls industrial grids yet vibrates with life.

Repetition and paradoxical material relationships create corporeal unities in flux—object-bodies in transition. For Crespo, the goal is not to cement images but to propose encounters between bodies in the in-between, liberating both work and viewer.
