Rosa Barba: Meaning Distances
“Meaning Distances” marks the first solo exhibition in Croatia by internationally acclaimed artist Rosa Barba. Presented within the framework of the 21st edition of the 25 FPS – International Experimental Film and Video Festival, the exhibition explores her ongoing engagement with the instability of knowledge and the shifting nature of perception. Barba’s works treat cinema not as a linear narrative device but as a sculptural, spatial, and performative medium. Projectors, celluloid, sound, and text are dismantled and recomposed into new constellations, disrupting cinematic hierarchies and opening up space for uncertainty, absence, and multiplicity.
Her practice probes the porous boundary between permanence and impermanence, fiction and reality, natural and human-made interventions. Landscapes and environments emerge as both subjects and actors, reflecting wider cultural and political transformations. By quantifying convergences of light, sound, and language, her works challenge dominant narratives and expand the potential of moving images to reconfigure time and space.
Organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb and 25 FPS Festival in collaboration with Studio Rosa Barba, the exhibition runs from 23 September to 9 November 2025. It coincides with the release of Printed Cinema #25: Charge, and opens with a conversation with the artist and a performance by Ivona Eterović.
