Alexander Calder & David Smith

Hauser & Wirth Zürich, Limmatstrasse 270, 8005 , Zurich, Switzerland

The gallery presents a group show uniting the works by the two great sculpturers Alexander Calder and David Smith. Hauser & Wirth exhibits works by Calder since 1992, and represents the estate of David Smith since 2015.

The surrealist artist Calder is famous for his “mobiles” – seemingly moving works, that are constructed out of delicately balanced or suspended shapes that move in response to touch or air currents. As a counterpart, he created so called “stabiles” – monumental stationary sculptures. He experimented in the fields of kinetic art and was fascinated by the contrasting dynamics between standstill and motion.

Smith, as an abstract expressionist, is best known for his large geometric sculptures. He can be seen as a pivotal artist in the dialogue between Europe and America, a dialog that is a focal point of the gallery’s program.

Since 2015, Hauser & Wirth is representing the estate of David Smith, and works closely together with the Smith family to ensure the artist’s international presence in the contemporary art world.
