Carlos Bunga: I Am A Nomad
The Portuguese artist Carlos Bunga (b. 1976 in Porto, lives and works in Barcelona) has become famous in recent years for his room-filling, site-specific installations. Architecture, painting and design constitute important fields of reference in his works. Bunga’s installations are mostly complex labyrinthine structures, which he constructs from cardboard and secures with adhesive tape. The card extends through the respective exhibition spaces, adopting their characteristics and becoming a space again itself.
Here, with the exhibition I Am A Nomad, the artist is interested in the handling of the material itself, in the painterly/installational appropriation of locations, and in the transience of architecture. His works are constructed on site, whereby the artist does not follow any preliminary drawings – instead, he conceives the works intuitively on the basis of the architectural givens. Bunga’s interventions draw attention to things that had gone unnoticed before.
For his exhibition at Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Carlos Bunga will conceive a parallel architectural world on the 5th floor. One room on the 4th floor is devoted to the drawings, sculptures and video works that Bunga develops in response to his installations. This exhibition is the first presentation in Switzerland by this artist, who has been nominated for the Artes-Mundi Art Prize 2014.
