Imi Knoebel: Guten Morgen, weisses Kätzchen

Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Selnaustrasse 25, 8001 Zürich, Switzerland

Museum Haus Konstruktiv hosts a comprehensive solo show by German artist Imi Knoebel (b. 1940 in Dessau, Germany, lives in Düsseldorf, Germany).

At the start of his career, the oeuvre of Russian suprematist Kazimir Malevich served Imi Knoebel as a key point of reference. Rejecting any kind of representational function, he developed an autonomous approach, which led him to a primarily serial way of working, characterized by haptic use of color, a geometric vocabulary of forms, and material aesthetics that are altogether simple.

On the first floor of Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Knoebel presents “Room 19 III” (1968/2006), the third version of his key work: an environment, arranged in a site-specific manner, which draws on his extensive body of fiberboard works and essentially constitutes his three-dimensional sketchbook. This is followed by pieces from his complex of works known as Core Pieces, which demonstrate the fundamental principles of his understanding of art. On the other floors, older and more recent works are displayed together and integrated into the museum context with new productions.
