Not Vital: Silence
“Silence” by Not Vital features a series of canvases dominated by a deep, Prussian blue. This colour, evocative of space and mystery, provides a backdrop for the familiar motif in Vital’s work: floating, oval-shaped heads. These heads, devoid of eyes or mouths and marked only by a simple vertical line for a nose, create a stark, silent presence against the dark background.
The exhibition showcases these heads as active elements within the compositions, bringing light and movement into the otherwise still blue fields. One head appears as a light blue ray, another is intersected by a light blue line, adding a touch of dynamism. The word “NOT” is painted on each canvas in light blue, alongside the date “25.1.24,” anchoring the works in a specific personal and temporal context.
A pane of glass hangs in front of each canvas, larger than the artwork itself, creating a physical separation that turns the paintings into quasi-sculptural pieces. This presentation emphasises the contemplative and detached nature of the works, encouraging viewers to reflect on the silent presence of the floating heads.
Vital’s interest in the archaic is apparent, with symbols and forms drawn from various cultures. His sculptures often juxtapose the comical with the tragic, exploring the complexities of life. In these blue paintings, this exploration continues in a quieter, more introspective form.
“Silence” offers a glimpse into Vital’s ongoing artistic journey, presenting a world where silence speaks volumes through the enigmatic heads and the deep blue space they occupy.
