The magic of characters

The unique culture of writing that has shaped China for more than 3,000 years is an important reason for the cultural continuity and cohesion that accord China a special place in world history. The exhibition illuminates all aspects of this tradition, highlighting the many different functions ascribed to Chinese writing over the centuries.

The magical aura and inspiring abstract beauty of Chinese characters are a source of fascination even for those who cannot read them. The exhibition invites visitors to explore Chinese characters and calligraphy from the earliest recorded writing all the way down to contemporary art and to delve into their many layers of meaning. It tells of messages sent to heaven and demonstrations of power on earth, of religious devotion and individual expression, of mythical cultural heroes and historic models – and of gatherings of poets merry with wine and mythical experiences in nature.

Works by contemporary Chinese artists enter into an intriguing dialogue with classical art. Their juxtaposition shows how the unique Chinese calligraphic tradition has retained its relevance until the present day. The «Writing Lab» provides answers to the most frequently asked questions about Chinese writing and offers visitors an opportunity to try out writing with brush and ink for themselves.
