University of Zurich, Rämistrasse 71

With the exhibition “Transactions“, the University of Zurich participates in the Biennale “Manifesta11”, which takes place this year in Zurich.

The University of Zurich brings with this exhibition (June 11 to July 10) art and research in a dialogue. “At UZH research many scientists on various aspects of the question, What people do for money ‘,” explains curator Michael Hiltbrunner who designed together with Katharina Weikl the Graduate Campus of the University of Zurich, the exhibition and the accompanying program. In which relationships work is to money or righteousness? What is its impact on the happiness or the health of the individual? “We want to show how artists and scientists, each with their own methods to approach these questions, thus stimulating the audience to find new compounds and approaches,” says Hiltbrunner.

Rituals and live experiment
“Transactions” brings 15 artistic positions from different sectors such as video, installation and photography, along with as many research. is set in relation, for example, the research of anthropologists Stephan Leins on economic analyst with the artistic approach to rituals of financial managers through the living in Los Angeles artist Julika Rudelius.

At a live experiment invites the Institute of Banking and Finance, where the visitors in the exhibition can answer the question: “And what do YOU do for money.” Various artists will specifically work for the exhibition works, such as the sound artist Fritz Hauser. “He is already hard to collect in the various laboratories and research institutes at UZH noise generated in the work of scientists,” explains Katharina Weikl. “His concert and sound installation are a special experience.”

Points of contact between art and science
The project was initiated by the Graduate Campus of the University of Zurich and generously supported by the Mercator Foundation Switzerland. Therefore, in the exhibition are projects by young researchers in the foreground. Katharina Weikl looks into the working methods of artists and scientists strong points of contact: Neither art nor science do you especially of money’s sake, she is convinced that “researchers as artists drives a large self-motivation. The career prospects are so difficult to calculate in both cases. ”

“Transactions” is accompanied by a series of events, from the film screening, concerts and performances to discussion. They should enhance the exhibition and deepen the issues raised therein. The Künstlergasse 12 city-side terrace outside the UZH main building will also be for the duration of the exhibition at a meeting with catering, music and outdoor stage. “For us it is a major concern, to reach a wide audience,” says Weikl. therefore a family-friendly program is scheduled on weekends and communicates with the water tank on the Künstlergasse 12 even a large wading pool available. “We will also place towels ready,” promises Weikl.
