William Kentridge. The Nose
Museum Haus Konstruktiv Zurich presents William Kentridge (b. 1955 in Johannesburg), one of the most highly regarded artists of our time in a comprehensive solo exhibition for the first time in Switzerland. At the center of his presentation is the 8-part video installation “I am not me, the horse is not mine”, which has previously been shown at MoMA in New York and Tate Modern in London. What makes the exhibition at Museum Haus Konstruktiv unique, is that it is the first to also present little-known works that were produced in the contentual context of the complex video work. These include bronzes, tapestries, drawings, collages and paper sculptures.
“I am not me, the horse is not mine” is based on the surrealist short story “The Nose”, which was written by Nikolai Gogol in 1836 and adapted for an opera byDmitri Shostakovich around 100 years later. William Kentridge looks into the era of the Russian Constructivists and their fight for social and artistic transformation – a transformation that was also a concern of the Zurich Concretists.
