Basel Social Club 2026

Basel Social Club returns for its 5th edition, continuing its nomadic tradition of transforming unexpected sites into temporary social spaces for art.

Both the subject and setting of this year’s edition is the office: a vacant multi-storey building designed by the architectural practice Diener & Diener, located just minutes from Basel SBB railway station and reimagined as a living environment for artistic and social exchange.

Concept

Titled “The Office”, this edition reconsiders the workplace as a space for reflection rather than production.

Once linked to efficiency and growth, the office now reflects changing realities shaped by digitalisation, remote work, and artificial intelligence.

The fair explores these themes through exhibitions, performances, music, gastronomy, and informal encounters.

Space

Developed across the building’s stacked floors, the architecture becomes part of the curatorial framework.

Reception desks, speculative HR departments, break rooms, co-working areas, and spaces for rest are transformed into environments for participation and exchange.

The programme also engages with questions of age and experience in contemporary work culture.

Programme

As in previous editions, emerging and established artists are presented alongside historical references, creating a layered programme of exhibitions and performances.

Food

Gastronomy is conceived as an integral part of the programme rather than a supporting element.

Led by chef Pascal Steffen’s fine-dining experience, the culinary programme also includes a range of local initiatives, from street food to more refined dining formats.

Night and Publishing

For the first time, a dedicated night programme extends activity into the evening through performances, music, and social exchange.

The underground parking area is transformed into a nightclub environment, activated by Matière Noire through a continuous light and sound installation.

This edition also introduces I Never Read, Art Book Fair Basel, which takes place within the building, expanding the programme through artist publications, zines, and independent publishing practices.
