Art Dubai 2017:“Ghariba/ Stranger”
Art Dubai has commissioned Moroccan-born, Brooklyn based artist Meriem Bennani, who will create an interactive bar installation, borrowing from playful strategies and designs that beauty salons, massage parlors or entertainment parks use to encourage social interaction amongst strangers. Titled “Ghariba/Stranger”, Bennani’s installation will include viewing stations for videos showing video portraits of Moroccan women.
The bar area will feature viewing pods for visitors to watch Meriem’s videos, inspired by public places that encourage social interactions amongst strangers and reminiscent of beauty salons or entertainment parks.
Meriem Bennani (b. 1988 Rabat, Morocco) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Bennani earned an MFA from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and a BFA from The Cooper Union in New York. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at Saatchi Gallery in London, SIGNAL and MoMA PS1 in New York, and Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
