High Jewellery Maison Van Cleef & Arpels, in collaboration with Design Days Dubai and Tashkeel, has announced the four finalists of this year’s The Middle East Emergent Designer Prize.

Now in its fourth year, The Middle East Emergent Designer Prize presents a unique opportunity for emerging designers living in the region to showcase their original works on a global level.

This year, the theme of nature aimed to inspire designers to work with natural materials or forms which are native to their immediate surroundings. Designers were asked to create design objects that serve a functional purpose suited to a contemporary lifestyle, incorporating influences from nature in both materials and structure.

Architect Ranim Orouk presents the concept of a traditionally glass blown chandelier that takes form and function from the jellyfish, representing the effervescence of their texture as they swim in groups.

Michael Rice, who specialises in ceramics is an Associate Professor of Studio Art at the American University of Dubai, and will work on a crystal bowl which is inspired by a spectrum of natural spiral forms found in shells, DNA helix, sand ripples and similar concepts.

Architect and designer Marta Krivosheek holds a Master’s Degree in Architecture from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, and is inspired by a combination of soap bubble experiments, steam wood bending technique and the Shasha, the traditional fishing boats used in the UAE and Oman to create the “Minimae Chair”.

Anjali Srinivasan aims to present viewers with a visual experience seen through “Vehicular Lens”, a pod made up of multiple glass lenses which alter the images of the space and light around them. This piece is and amalgamation of 3 local, nature-based inspirations: a flower pod, sand and light.

“This year, the quality of the applications demonstrates the incredible emerging talent in the Middle-East,” said Alessandro Maffi, Managing Director Van Cleef & Arpels Middle East & India. “We are thrilled to provide a platform for the original works that come out of this dynamic project, and look forward to welcoming our fourth winner to L’Ecole, Paris.”

The winning designer will receive a prize of AED 30,000 to produce the final work, which will be unveiled and showcased at the Van Cleef & Arpels exhibition during Design Days Dubai 2016, 14-18 March. (@vancleefarpels)
