Known as the gateway between the East and West, Hong Kong ranks among the world’s most dynamic international capitals. A 21st century metropolis, it is a port city with a vast skyline rising above its bustling Victoria Harbour. In addition to the many museums, concert halls, and performance spaces, a vibrant melting pot of cultures makes Hong Kong a place of endless exploration.
The third edition of Art Basel’s show in Hong Kong will take place for the first time in March at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, the new timing will be significantly more convenient for participating galleries, collectors, curators, and the artworld in general, enabling a broader international audience to attend the leading fair in Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.
The show assumes a significant role in the international artworld with half of the participating galleries coming from Asia and Asia-Pacific, and the remaining galleries hailing from Europe, the Americas and the Middle East. The six exhibition sectors of the show allow visitors to explore the many dimensions of Modern and contemporary art including museum-caliber paintings, sculptures and classical photography, as well as a curated selection of large-scale works that transcend a gallery’s traditional art show stand
Art Basel in Hong Kong traces twelve decades of art history across its six sectors: Galleries, Insights, Discoveries, Encounters, Magazines and Film. On display will be the highest quality of paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned works from the 20th and 21st centuries, by more than 3,000 artists from Asia and around the globe. The show will also offer extensive opportunities for intellectual discovery, through discussions and presentations, creating a platform of cross-cultural exchanges for artists, gallerists, collectors, and visitors.
Each Art Basel show has its own selection committee, a panel consisting of esteemed international gallerists. During a very intensive process, each applicant is thoroughly reviewed by the relevant selection committee according to strict standards for excellence established by Art Basel. Each year is a new opportunity for galleries to participate; every applicant undergoes the identical review process and is given the same consideration, whether they have previously applied or shown at Art Basel, or not.
