The Armory Show 2019

Piers 92 & 94, 711 12th Avenue, New York City, Piers 92 & 94, 711 12th Avenue

Founded in 1994, The Armory Show is New York City‘s first art fair and a landmark in the cultural landscape of contemporary art market.
The fair was first conceived by four New York gallerists – Colin de Land, Pat Hearn, Matthew Marks and Paul Morris – with the aim to create a platform to present innovative artistic talents; nowadays, consistently with its original mission, The Armory Show is the ideal destination for collectors from all over the world, exhibiting important 20th-and-21st-century art from world leading galleries.

Led by Nicole Berry, Executive Director, the 2019 edition marks the 25th Anniversary of the fair, which opens from March 7-10, 2019 at Piers 92 and 94 divided into several sections.

The core section of The Armory Show is Galleries, featuring international leading galleries which present outstanding 20th-and-21st-century art pieces in a wide range of media. This year, the list includes 109 participants from all over the world.

The “Insightssection is focused on solo and dual-artist, and thematic presentations of art pieces produced before the year 2000. Between the highlights, modern and post-war canonical artworks and some rediscovered gems from the 20th century.

Presents, on the other hand, is the section including galleries no more than ten years old, to showcase pieces by young or emerging artists through solo and dual exhibitions. The 2019 edition includes 26 galleries, with promising artists.

The 2019 Focus section is curated by Lauren Haynes, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. This year’s selection includes 29 galleries, unified by the investigation of identity through figuration of both real and imagined forms. The section is conceived to present solo and  dual-artist exhibitions including today’s most interesting talents.

Finally, “Platform” – dedicated to large-scale artworks, installations and commissions staged across Piers 92 & 94 – is curated by Sally Tallant, the recently appointed Executive Director of the Queens Museum, and formerly Director of Liverpool Biennial. The 2019 edition is the third for the section and draws inspiration from the 1939 New York World’s Fair, which tried to offer an hopeful perspective on the future in the uncertainty of that period. This year too, the participant artists are invited to investigate new future narrations, in the current status quo dominated by environmental, socioeconomic and political challenges.

This edition sees also the coming back of some historical exhibitors, who participated in the earliest editions of the fair, such as 303 Gallery (New York), Tanya Bonakdar Gallery (New York, Los Angeles), Galerie Krinzinger (Vienna), and Zeno X Gallery (Antwerp). At the same time, several new and first-time galleries from the five continents have been included, such as A Gentil Carioca (Rio de Janeiro), carlier | gebauer (Berlin), Selma Feriani Gallery (Sidi Bou Said), Stephen Friedman Gallery (London), Antoine Levi (Paris), David Nolan Gallery (New York), Öktem&Aykut (Istanbul), ShanghART Gallery (Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore), Sorry We’re Closed (Brussels), and Tif Sigfrids (Athens, GA).
