ASIA NOW, Paris Asian Art Fair, the first contemporary art fair highlighting the diversity of artistic scenes in Asia, celebrates its 9th edition from October 19 to 22, 2023, at the Monnaie de Paris.
For the second year, Asia NOW will take place throughout the entire palace of Monnaie de Paris, organised around outdoor courtyards in a site classified as a Historical Monument, which has retained its original purpose as a coin minting factory.
In this prestigious setting, emblematic of French neoclassical architecture, 60 international galleries presenting the best of the artistic scenes from territories ranging from West Asia to Southeast Asia, and from Central Asia to the Asia-Pacific. A new section called NOW ON is dedicated to young galleries.
In total, 220 emerging and established artists will be exhibited in gallery spaces and within curatorial projects, as well as through encounters, public debates, and performative and culinary events.
The artistic direction of this edition, titled Weaving the World, is entrusted to Kathy Alliou, director of the Department of Fine Arts at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Special attention will be given to the diasporic question and the contribution of diasporas to artistic scenes, as well as a focus on textile practices and the richness of their artistic manifestations.
The collective “Slavs and Tatars” is the Guest Curator of the curatorial platform for Asia NOW 2023. Their exhibition, presenting works by 14 artists, will focus on textiles in contemporary art from Central Asia. It will unfold as a journey punctuated by experiences within the iconic Monnaie de Paris, the oldest active minting institution today. The Cour d’Honneur will host a Chaikhaneh, or tea salon, designed by the artists to receive visitors for a tasting experience. On this occasion, Slavs and Tatars will also create a Reading Room, a lounge with reading beds, facilitating encounters and exchanges.
