Asia Now – Paris Asian Art Fair 2024
More than just an art fair Asia NOW is a curated platform fostering rich dialogues and deeply engaged programming. It encompasses: a global selection of galleries showcasing artists from across Asia, and an ambitious platform dedicated to commissioning site-specific installations, projects, and performances. These works spark broader conversations around contemporary issues, uniting like-minded communities across the region and beyond.
The tenth edition of Asia Now, under the artistic direction of the curatorial collective “Radicants” founded by Nicolas Bourriaud, is titled “Ceremony” and is an immersive exhibition that challenges the traditional format of art fairs. Hosted at La Monnaie, “Ceremony” celebrates the power of collective practices, using art to transform social structures, traditions, and hierarchies.
Asia Now is the only fair dedicated to artists from across the Asian continent and its diasporas, becoming a meeting place that celebrates a multipolar world, redefining the Global South. It is not limited to geography but addresses methodological issues, making Asia a spirit to channel and a critical lens through which to examine postcolonial narratives. Asia Now‘s approach focuses on discovery, bringing divergent cosmologies and aesthetic traditions to the forefront, where universes coexist, amplifying the voices of the Global South.
Within the spaces of La Monnaie, artistic practices explore hospitality, conviviality, and social cohesion. The works transcend mere representation, treating ceremonies as expressions of mutual care and vibrant life, inviting reflection on how art can process trauma and loss in times marked by conflict and political instability. Asia Now thus becomes an essential tribute to the importance of ceremonies in fostering empathy, resilience, and a shared vision of a more interconnected existence.
COMMISSIONED INSTALLATIONS
Britto Arts Trust presents “Palan & Pakghor (The Kitchen Garden and The Social Kitchen)”, an outdoor space where people cook, share stories, and enjoy food from various communities in Riyadh. The installation recreates the Bengali palan (kitchen garden) and pakghor (family kitchen), celebrating cultural connections and sustainability.
Sumayya Vally exhibits “They who bring rain, bring life”, featuring clay jars arranged in a circular space that symbolizes the organic cycle of life. Supported by the MTO Sufi Art and Culture Museum, the installation is activated by Sufi performances, blending the elements of time, nature, and human interaction.
