33rd Bienal de São Paulo: Afinidades Afetivas

“Affective Affinities” offers an alternative to thematic exhibitions by focusing the artists’ gaze on their own creative contexts. The 33rd Bienal de São Paulo features 7 group shows organised by invited artist-curators as well as 12 individual projects selected by curator Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro.

The title for the 33rd edition of the Bienal de São Paulo was selected by its curator Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, director and chief curator of the Cisneros Collection, to resonate with ideas presented in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel Elective Affinities (1809), as well as Mário Pedrosa’s important thesis On the Affective Nature of Form in the Work of Art (1949).

‘The seven artist-curators have been working with full autonomy both in regards to each other and to the general curatorship. The only imposed limitations are of a practical nature such as budgets and the use of physical space within the Bienal Pavilion’, explains Pérez-Barreiro.

International Weekend: Sep 21 – 23, 2018
After the opening of the Bienal de São Paulo, Fundação Bienal holds, for the first time, an International Weekend aimed at meeting the needs of researchers and art professionals, as well as international groups from cultural institutions, universities and collections. The International Weekend is exclusively for accredited visitors
based outside Brazil. The programme includes prescheduled visits that accredited participants are able to choose from to selected major cultural local institutions, prime private collections and guided visits to the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo led by curator Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro and artist-curators.
