Viva Arte Viva – The 57th Venice Biennale

Arsenale and Giardini, Arsenale and Giardini della Biennale

The 57th Venice Biennale is curated by Christine Macel and titled Viva Arte Viva.

The exhibition is organized in nine chapters (families of artists as they are defined by the curator) and it begins with two introductory ones in the Central Pavilion, it is then followed by the remaining nine in the Arsenale and Giardino delle Vergini. Each of the nine chapters «represents a Pavilion in itself, or rather a Trans-Pavilion as it is trans-national by nature but echoes the Biennale’s historical organisation into pavilions, the number of which has never ceased to grow since the end of the 1990s.» stated the curator.

The artists invided are 120, coming from 51 different countries and 103 of them are participating at the Biennale for the first time.

Viva Arte Viva also includes 85 National Participations hosted in the Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale and in venues around Venice. Among these, four countries are participating for the first time: Antigua and Barbuda, Kiribati, Nigeria, and Kazakhstan.
