The Standard

A glossy red lift climbs the façade of The Standard, London, a Brutalist building completed in 1974 as an annex to Camden Town Hall, across the Euston Road from St Pancras. The American brand opened it as a hotel in 2019, after a conversion by the architects Orms, with interiors by Shawn Hausman. The ground floor, once a public library, is now a lounge lined with books and furnished with vintage pieces by Tobia Scarpa and Mario Bellini. The 266 rooms and suites range from compact doubles to rooftop rooms with their own terraces, in a palette of deep reds and blues with cork floors and wooden blinds. The lift rises to Decimo, Peter Sanchez-Iglesias’s Mexican restaurant on the tenth floor, where tacos, aguachiles and fire-grilled seafood come with views across the city. Downstairs, Double Standard serves food and drinks all day and has a beer garden, and Sweeties is the late-night bar.
