El Cardenal
El Cardenal is a beloved institution in the heart of Mexico City's historic center, renowned for its traditional cuisine and authentic recipes that have stood the test of time.
Founded in 1969 by Olivia Garizurieta and Jesús Briz, what began as a humble family endeavor to support their loved ones has evolved into one of the city’s most iconic dining establishments. Today, El Cardenal continues to thrive under the guidance of the children of the original owners, who have preserved the essence of the place while expanding its menu and reach.
The dining room, with its turn-of-the-century stained glass windows and murals depicting Mexican life, provides a warm, inviting atmosphere. El Cardenal’s extensive menu draws inspiration from the home regions of its founders – Veracruz and Michoacán – and has since expanded to include a diverse range of traditional Mexican dishes. Signature items like the buttery ant egg omelet, the codfish torta with olives and tomatoes, and the rich, fresh queso de rancho cheese with avocado and green salsa have made the restaurant a favourite of locals and visitors alike.
El Cardenal is a true reflection of Mexico’s rich culinary heritage, expertly served in a welcoming environment that has made it a pillar of Mexico City’s restaurant scene for over 50 years.
