Title: Matías Duville. Monitor Yin Yang
Commissioner: Directorate for Cultural Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship
Curator: Josefina Barcia
Exhibitor: Matías Duville
“Monitor Yin Yang” is a site-specific installation that transforms the exhibition space into a traversable territory composed of salt and charcoal. The project expands drawing a central language in the artist’s practice into a spatial, sonic, and performative experience. The installation proposes an open cartography that does not represent a specific location but is instead activated by the movement of visitors and the interaction between materials, sound, and time.
Drawing on the worldview of yin and yang, the project explores a territory where opposing forces such as light and shadow, waste and energy, and ruin and promise coexist. On a surface of white salt, lines traced with ground charcoal form an unstable landscape of mountains and paths that shift as they are walked upon. The choice of materials highlights a friction between temporal scales: salt evokes geological permanence, while charcoal represents plant combustion and energy transformation.
The installation also addresses how landscapes are mediated by observation and recording technologies. An original sound composition, developed in collaboration with the Center for Computational Sonology (CSC) at the University of Padua, integrates real-time environmental data from Venice. These variables are translated into shifting sonic textures, incorporating the invisible dimension of air into the physical environment of salt and charcoal.
