Since 2004, the Flanders Architecture Institute has produced an exhibition in the Belgian Pavilion every four years, alternating coordination with the French Community of Belgium. This year, “Plant Intelligence” takes centre stage. Commissioned by the institute on the initiative of the Flemish government, Bas Smets and Stefano Mancuso present Building Biospheres, exploring how plant intelligence can shape architecture and indoor climate.
Envisioning buildings as dynamic biospheres, the project uses subtropical plants to regulate irrigation, lighting, and ventilation, creating a self-sustaining microclimate. The Belgian Pavilion at the 2025 Biennale will serve as a prototype for this vision.
