Title: Ka’a Pûera: nós somos pássaros que andam
Commissioner: José Olympio da Veiga Pereira, President of the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo
Curator: Arissana Pataxó, Denilson Baniwa, and Gustavo Caboco Wapichana
Artist: Glicéria Tupinambá and members of the Tupinambá people
Glicéria Tupinambá artist and activist, is the artist of Brazilian Pavilion at Venice Biennale 2024. Despite being the first artist officially credited for the pavilion, historical context notes Chico da Silva’s prior representation in 1966.
Glicéria’s presentation, “Ka’a Pûera: we are walking birds“, explores the capoeira bird’s symbolism, representing the threatened Tupinambá forests facing corporate exploitation. Known for both art and activism, Glicéria’s imprisonment in 2010 underscores her commitment to preserving Tupinambá culture.
The pavilion seeks to amplify marginalized voices and address territorial rights violations, emphasizing resilience and the possibility of resurgence. While Glicéria is the credited artist, collaboration with other Tupinambá community members is anticipated. The pavilion serves as a platform for cultural representation, activism, and resilience.
