Czech and Slovak Republic 2024
The exhibition explores Czechoslovak history from ecological and decolonial perspectives, through the story of a real giraffe named Lenka.
Title: Eva Kotátková: The heart of a giraffe in captivity is twelve kilos lighter
Commissioner: Michal Novotný
Curator: Hana Janečková
Artist: Eva Kotátková
Lenka, the first Czechoslovak giraffe, captured in 1954 and exhibited in Prague Zoo, inspires this exhibition challenging traditional views of animal display.
Through collaborative projects and immersive experiences, the installation prompts reflection on hierarchies and violence in human-animal relationships.
By reimagining Lenka’s story and advocating for alternative modes of engagement rooted in care and imagination, the exhibition fosters collective storytelling and decolonial pedagogy. Ultimately, it offers a transformative vision of belonging beyond fixed identities and borders.
