Influenced by Ethiopian iconography, Russian realism & German neo-expressionism, Urgessa’s works showcase highly anatomical and symbolic compositions under an eerie psychological lens. The project focuses on artist’s last thirteen years in Germany aiding in migrant camps. The works endeavour to dismantle the harmful stereotypes borne upon refugees & migrants, and seek to tell their stories as his subjects navigate the tribulations of their new circumstances.
