Title: La Merde
Commissioner: Kultur | lx – Arts Council Luxembourg, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture
Curator: Stilbé Schroeder, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain
Exhibitor: Aline Bouvy
“La Merde” is a film project and immersive audiovisual installation by Aline Bouvy. The artist’s multidisciplinary practice investigates social structures, normative systems, and the power mechanisms that regulate behaviour and desire.
The centrepiece is a film featuring a female anthropomorphic excrement protagonist who appears as a puppet, 2D animation, and an embodied character. The narrative follows her through various settings—a classroom, a tram, a bar, and a bedroom—before concluding with a public performance based on Dan Graham’s “Identification/Projection” (1977).
The project functions as a feminist manifesto and cinematographic essay, exploring shame as a social construct and a potential response to systemic violence. Drawing on theoretical reflections regarding abjection, the work questions the historical relationship between femininity and social order. The installation features a large-scale LED screen and a sophisticated spatialised sound design created in collaboration with composer Pierre Dozin, designed to function as an autonomous, living entity.
