Holy See 2025
"Opera aperta" is an invitation to reflect on architecture's ability to be a place of openness, physically and symbolically.
Title: Opera aperta
Commissioner: Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça
Curators: Marina Otero Verzier, Giovanna Zabotti
Exhibitors: Tatiana Bilbao Estudio, MAIO Architects
The concept of “Opera Aperta” extends to the design of spaces capable of welcoming, including, and adapting to social and cultural changes. The curatorial approach highlights architecture as a continuously evolving process, not only responding to present needs but also fostering a global dialogue on contemporary issues, such as sustainability, spirituality, and inclusion.
The selection of the Santa Maria Ausiliatrice Complex as the pavilion’s venue underscores the connection between the Holy See and Venice’s cultural and spiritual heritage. This historic site, deeply rooted in the city’s religious and cultural traditions, serves as the perfect setting to explore the relationship between architecture, spirituality, and contemporary society.
Through this exhibition, the Holy See invites visitors to see architecture not just as the art of building, but as a medium for conveying values of openness, sustainability, and hospitality in a world facing increasingly urgent collective challenges.
