Iceland 2025
The project envisions a future society that has managed to harness lava flow as a building material.
Title: Lavaforming
Commissioner: Halla Helgadóttir, Iceland Design and Architecture
Curators: Arnhildur Pálmadóttir
Exhibitors: s.ap architects (Arnhildur Pálmadóttir, Arnar Skarphéðinsson, Björg Skarphéðinsdóttir, Sukanya Mukherjee, Andri Snær Magnason, Jack Armitage)
Set in 2150, the story presented at the Icelandic pavilion envisions a society that has harnessed the lava flow in the same way that it learned to use geothermal energy. The concept serves as a practical proposal and a metaphor for a paradigm shift in architecture, urging bold, creative thinking to address current environmental challenges and outdated practices.
The goal is to show that architecture can be the force that rethinks and shapes a new future, and to highlight how local threats can be transformed into valuable resources.
