Title: In-Between

Curator: Jun Aoki
Exhibitors: Tamayo Iemura, Asako Fujikura + Takahiro Ohmura , SUNAKI (Toshikatsu Kiuchi and Taichi Sunayama)
The pavilion explores the evolving relationship between humans and artificial intelligence in architecture. Drawing from the Japanese concept of ma—the “in-between” space that emerges from dialogue and tension—it proposes a new perspective on intelligence. Rather than positioning humans, AI, or the environment as dominant, ma suggests that true intelligence arises from their interactions. In this vision, nature, technology, and human agency merge into a continuous, dynamic exchange.
The Japan Pavilion itself becomes an experimental space, where its architectural elements—the Hole, Wall Columns, Outer Walls, Brick Terrace, Pensilina, Tilted Loop Path, and Yew Tree—engage in a dialogue with a team of curators and artist-architect duos through both fictional and real interactions, the exhibition imagines a near-future where intelligence is no longer confined to humans or machines, but instead emerges in the in-between—a shared space of creativity, tension, and transformation.
