Another Country
The Republic of Kenya participates at the 57th Venice Biennale with the group show Another Country featuring works by the artists Arlene Wandera, Mwangi Hutter, Peterson Kamwathi, Paul Onditi, Richard Kimathi, curated by Jimmy Ogonga, hosted at Scuola Palladio, Giudecca
The title “Another Country” is inspired by James Baldwin’s 1961 novel narrating a crucial year in the lives of its 8 major characters. Many African countries have been changed by history and now they have to reinvent themselves through art as the only remaining form of intelligence to survive in this brutal reality.
That country emerges in all its complexity, showing different notion of nation because each artist is an island on his own, leading us into the heart of the unspeakable and repetitive reality of contemporary art.
