Morocco (Kingdom of) 2026
Title: Asǝṭṭa
Commissioner: Mohammed Benyaacoub
Curator: Meriem Berrada
Exhibitor: Amina Agueznay
Designed specifically for the Artiglierie of the Arsenale, “Asǝṭṭa” is a monumental installation that explores the transmission of traditional craftsmanship and shared memory. The work focuses on the symbolism of thresholds, aligning with the edition’s theme, “In Minor Keys”, selected by Koyo Kouoh. The title “Asǝṭṭa” is an Amazigh word referring to ritual weaving, reflecting a connection to the land, gestures, and voices that sustain Moroccan artisanal traditions.
Agueznay’s research is rooted in vernacular knowledge. With a background in architecture, she conceives her works as spaces to be inhabited, considering scale, rhythm, and materials. Through workshops and residencies across Morocco, she collaborates with local communities, including weavers, basket makers, and master craftsmen. “Asǝṭṭa” investigates the concept of the “âatba” (threshold), the passage between interior and exterior, or sacred and profane. The installation serves as a living archaeology of gestures, honouring often invisible talents and activating craftsmanship as a language and thought in action.
