Nordic Countries (Finland, Norway, Sweden) 2026
Title: How Many Angels Can Dance on the Head of a Pin?
Commissioners: Kiira Miesmaa, Director of the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art / The Finnish National Gallery; Gitte Ørskou, Director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Ruben Steinum, Director of the OCA in Norway
Curator: Anna Mustonen
Exhibitors: Benjamin Orlow, Klara Kristalova, Tori Wrånes
The exhibition consists of interconnected installations inspired by Nordic folklore and epics, such as the “Kalevala”, to explore cycles of decay, renewal, and transformation. Through hybrid works merging plant, animal, and human forms, the artists use myth as a lens to reflect on the shared human condition amidst environmental and geopolitical instability. Klara Kristalova contributes ceramic figures that blend fairytale imagery with the natural world, while Benjamin Orlow produces monumental sculptures drawing on material culture. Tori Wrånes incorporates music, performance, and sculpture to create otherworldly environments.
The installations extend throughout the interior and exterior of the 1962 pavilion, treating the architecture as an integral part of the evolving ecology. The title refers to a philosophical thought experiment regarding unanswerable questions, here serving as an enquiry into how diverse bodies and beliefs can coexist. The exhibition invites reflection on coexistence and the relationship between humanity, nature, and time.
