National Participations

Peru

Arsenale, Arsenale, Castello

The Republic of Peru, in collaboration with Fundación Wiese and El Comercio, are going to participate for the first time with their own Pavilion at the 56th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. The artists Gilda Mantilla and Raimond Chaves have been selected and will present the installation Misplaced Ruins.

Gilda Mantilla (Los Angeles, 1967) and Raimond Chaves (Bogota, 1963) are two of the most prominent artists of their generation. Based in Peru for over a decade, the artistic duo has repeatedly explored issues related to collective imaginaries and the problems around the idea of a territorial identity (Mantilla has American and Peruvian nationalities and Chaves Colombian and Spanish). Their best-known example of this approach is perhaps Drawing America (2005-2009), conjoining travel, drawing and the idea of territorial representation, in a project developed in a series of travels throughout the continent.
