Poland 2025
The exhibition considers the original function of architecture as a shelter from danger.
Title: Lares and Penates: On Building a Sense of Security in Architecture
Commissioner: Agnieszka Pindera
Curator: Aleksandra Kędziorek
Exhibitors: Krzysztof Maniak, Katarzyna Przezwańska, and Maciej Siuda
Architecture has always served as protection, but the threats it shields us from have evolved, including climate change, war, and mass migration. This exhibition explores how architecture fosters security through regulations and rituals. It presents fire codes, locks, and alarms alongside Polish traditions like the wiecha wreath, a lucky horseshoe, and a blessed candle.
The exhibition spans both the pavilion and its facade, with objects created or found by the curatorial team, emphasizing collective work. It highlights how practical safety measures and emotional traditions merge, revealing how architectural practices address both rational concerns and subconscious anxieties. Through this lens, architecture is seen as a humanist discipline that draws from various artistic and cultural traditions.
