Transcending time and space, humans are the true unifying element in architecture

Giardini; The New Gallery of the Romanian Institute of Culture and Humanistic Research, Calle Giazzo, 30122 Castello, Venice, Italy; Fondamenta Trapolin 2214, 30121 Cannaregio, Venice, Italy

Title: Human Scale
Commissioner: Attila Kim
Curator: Cosmina Goagea
Exhibitors: Vlad Nancă and Muromuro studio

Building on Nancă’s artistic research, the exhibition highlights the various forms of intelligence–conceptual, historical, technological, artistic, emotional–embodied in architectural drawing as a form of thinking and modelling the built space. It revisits 20th-century architecture through drawings, focusing on how people were envisioned in public spaces. Nancă enlarges these human figures from the sketches, highlighting people’s central role in the built environment.

The exhibition presents a chronological selection of Romanian architectural drawings alongside historical maps (15th–19th century), analysing how architecture shapes collective identities, projects political power, and influences historical narratives, offering new perspectives for re-inventing existing structures and adapting them to contemporary life.

The New Gallery of the RICHR will transform into a space for research and experimentation, showcasing the documentary resources behind Romania’s Human Scale exhibition in the
form of an extensive archive of drawings by Romanian architects from the 20th century. The exhibition design supports in-depth study, featuring a central desk positioned between two pillars—one hosting an exhibition area and the other an archive structured by decade.
