Title: « WURUS* » – What the Earth provides us with…
Commissioner: Oumar Sall
Curator: Massamba Mbaye
Exhibitor: Caroline Gueye

The title, meaning “gold” in Wolof, serves as a starting point to approach the material as a symbol of value and power, while questioning how value becomes perceptible in the contemporary world.

The exhibition references the cosmic origins of gold, formed by the collision of neutron stars and carried to Earth by meteorites. It acknowledges how this rare material has shaped economies, empires, and imaginations throughout history, from the prosperity of the Mali Empire under Mansa Musa to modern global systems.

Rather than representing the precious metal directly, “Wurus” explores the conditions through which value is perceived today. The installation creates a spatial experience shaped by movement, distance, and changing viewpoints, inviting visitors to reconsider how value emerges. The project posits that what is valued is not merely a matter of possession but is fundamentally shaped by perception.
