Serbia 2025
The exhibition highlights the simultaneity of traditional craftsmanship and experimental computational adaptability.
Title: Unraveling: New spaces
Commissioner: Biljana Jotić, director of the Museum of Applied Art
Curator: Slobodan Jovic
Exhibitors: Davor Eres, Jelena Mitrović, Igor Pantić, Sonja Krstić, Ivana Najdanović, Petar Laušević
The project weaves together Serbia’s rich traditions of knitting, weaving, and embroidery with its history of technological innovation, notably the creation of the “Belgrade Hand,” the world’s first bionic hand developed in 1963 at the Mihajlo Pupin Institute.
Central to the exhibition is a 100-kilogram knitted form that undergoes a process of unraveling throughout the Biennale’s duration, symbolising themes of adaptability and cyclical transformation. As the structure unravels, the yarn is repurposed into clothing items, embodying principles of sustainability and continuous creation.
This dynamic installation serves as a platform to explore the interplay between construction and deconstruction, tradition and innovation, and the collective intelligence inherent in both human craftsmanship and technological advancement. By engaging visitors in this evolving process, the Serbian Pavilion invites reflection on the potential of unraveling as a means to create new spatial and conceptual horizons.
