Giardini, Giardini della Biennale, Castello

Title: ANTIFRAGILE
Commissioner: Martín Craciun, National Institute of Visual Arts, National Directorate of Culture, Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay
Curator: Patricia Betancourt
Exhibitor: Margaret Whyte

The exhibition is based on the concept of “antifragility” developed by Nassim Taleb, which describes systems that become stronger and more adaptable through disorder and instability.

“ANTIFRAGIL” assembles diverse elements, including textiles combined with obsolete technological objects such as old machinery, motorcycle helmets, and debris. This assemblage gains intensity through the friction between its components, suggesting a political mode of thought that references Arthur Danto’s reflections on the relationship between art and philosophy. Whyte’s work focuses on social and gender issues, rejecting simplification and challenging traditional hierarchies between craft and contemporary art.

The project reflects on how alternative geographies and critical perspectives can transform artistic repertoires, exhibition methods, and the production of knowledge, projecting a singular voice from Uruguay onto the international stage.
