A new public intervention by JR to reimagine Palazzo Strozzi’s facade in Spring 2021

French artist JR will reimagine the facade of Palazzo Strozzi in Spring 2021. A monumental site-specific intervention titled “The Wound” will change the appearance of the Rinascimental architecture as a reflection on the condition of art spaces during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since many cultural institutions have been forced to close or limit access to their collections, JR’s creation will engage art audiences on a new level. The artwork on the facade will be visible to everyone, an invitation to restore direct contact with art through new forms of sharing and fruition.

JR’s research mainly expresses through public art, with his signature style photographic collages. His works address issues of originality and appropriation and actively engaged the audiences while displayed in the most diverse international locations, such as Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, the pyramid of the Musée du Louvre, Ellis Island in New York, Venice, and more.

Yesterday, March 2, also marked the tenth anniversary of JR’s internationally renown Inside Out Project. The artist initiated it as a collective platform in 2011 during his first TED Talk. People’s interest and participation soon grew exponentially and today the project is still alive, engaging people all over the world in immersive interventions.
Through the Inside Out Project, individuals and communities have the opportunity to make a statement about compelling issues through displaying large-scale black and white portraits in public spaces, as in JR’s style.
For the occasion, a series of events will take place, from Inside Out Project’s website redesign to new public interventions and publications, and more. Besides all that, the project’s ambassadors will share Inside Out actions on the social media platform Beams each week.
