Architect and sculptor Anish Kapoor to exhibit a new series of works during the Venice Art Biennale in 2021

The British sculptor and architect Anish Kapoor will unveil his new series of works during the 2021 Venice Art Biennale. On the occasion, a monographic exhibition will be dedicated to the artist at Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice.
Kapoor claims the new sculptures to be the world’s blackest pieces, thanks to the use of the controversial “Vantablack” material. Defined as “the blackest material in the universe”, it was developed by a British scientific research company with aerospatial and defense ends in 2014. Two years later, Kapoor controversially acquired the exclusive rights to use it for artistic purposes, challenging a popular argument against artists monopolising a colour.
The Vantablack traps nearly all light falling on it, producing the effect of a-dimensional surfaces. This reconnects with Kapoor’s interest in the concept of void, also explored in the “void sculptures” which earned him the Turner Prize in 1991, and were exhibited at the British Pavilion in 1990.
The sculptures will be shown at Gallerie dell’Accademia alongside the new ones. Referring to the latter, Greg Hilty, the curatorial director of Lisson Gallery, which represents Kapoor, stated: “These works take earlier ideas present in his work to extremes.”
The exhibition at Gallerie dell’Accademia will mark the first time that artworks produced with this material will be shown to the public.
