Yesterday, Art Basel announced the cancellation of its upcoming international fair Art Basel Miami Beach, scheduled for the early December 2020. The decision was driven by the emergency caused by the Covid19 outbreak, critical in South Florida, and the uncertainty of regulations about large gatherings and international travels.
The event follows the cancellation of Art Basel Hong Kong, due to take place in March 2020, and the flagship Art Basel fair in Switzerland, scheduled for June 2020. In the place of the physical fair, an online programme of cultural initiatives will take place in the first days of December.

After Art Basel’s statement, Art Miami Show Group, producing the other major fairs of Miami art week, also announced the annulment of Art Miami, CONTEXT Art Miami, and Aqua Art Miami 2020. In their places, a new online format will be launched, Miami Art City, running from December 1–6. The satellite fair NADA Miami also announced its cancellation and a different hybrid initiative. The fair invited the participating galleries to install the booths in their spaces or the urban areas and to film them. The videos will be broadcast on NADA’s online portal, from December 1–5.
