This year, on the occasion of Art City Bologna 2020, the new performance by the Italian theatrical director Romeo Castellucci (Cesena, 1960) will have its Italian premiere. The piece La vita nuova” (“The new life”) will be staged as the special project of Bologna’s Art Week (January 17-26, 2020), the institutional cultural programme of cultural initiatives, exhibitions, and events, promoted by the Bologna City Council in collaboration with BolognaFiere, during Arte Fiera (January 24 – 26, 2020).

The performance revolves around the dialogue between five brothers, discussing the future and the oppressed human condition, addressing social, economic and political topics. The conversation also includes a severe critic of art, considered an abstract idea rather than a concrete tool to shape reality. The five protagonists on the stage embody a sort of prophets of the future.

Theatrical director, author, and artist, Castellucci was awarded the career Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2013. He adapted the piece from “The Spirit of Utopia”, a philosophical text by Ernst Bloch, prospecting possible future sceneries. After traveling internationally, “La vita nuova” will be staged in Bologna at DumBo Space, on January 24, 2020, at 7 pm, and January 25, 2020, at 7 and 9 pm, during the Booming Contemporary Art Show.
