Artist Fusun Onor will represent Turkey during the 59th International Art Exhibition, taking place from May to November 2021, in Venice. The IKSV – Istanbul Foundation for Arts and Culture gave the news, also announcing Bige Örer, current director of Istanbul Biennial and chief of contemporary art projects at IKSV, to curate the pavilion at the Venetian Arsenale, Venice.

In the advisory board of the Pavilion of Turkey at la Biennale di Venezia’s words, Onur’s installations “stand out with their ability to erase the universally defined boundaries such as identity, culture, and language, and to linger as a musical note in living beings, regardless of place and space”.

Considered a fundamental figure in the renewal of Turkish contemporary art, Onur was born in 1938 in Istanbul. Her work is marked by a signature style, challenging conventional sculpture. Her installations are strongly rhythmed and made of found objects, often referring to her biographical experiences and childish memories. Onur’s works were featured in museums and events worldwide, such as the Instanbul Biennial (1987, 1995, 2011, 2015), and dOCUMENTA(12) in Kassel.
