Artists and curator appointed for Brazilian Pavilion at 58th Venice Biennale
The Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointed Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, former curator of 33rd Bienal de São Paulo, to curate Brazilian Pavilion at the 58th Venice Art Biennale,”due to to the wide knowledge he has demonstrated about Brazilian art, to his good integration with the Fundação’s team, and to the affinity between the concepts he mobilised at the 33rd Bienal de São Paulo and those proposed for the 58th Venice Biennale” as said by João Carlos de Figueiredo Ferraz, president of the Fundação Bienal.
Pérez-Barreiro selected the artist duo Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca to represent the country. The two will realise a film specially commissioned for the occasion and related to the overall theme of the Biennale, namely “May You Live In Interesting Times”: the work, in fact, will deal with the complex and conflictive situation of Brazilian society, investigating it from a critical point of view. Wagner & de Burca focus in particular on popular culture and the ways it absorbs images and phenomena from daily life and mass media, adopting an objective gaze without any stereotype.
