Contemporaine de Nîmes: The Flower and the Strength

The Contemporaine de Nîmes is a new triennial for contemporary art launched by the city of Nîmes. Every three years, a selection of today’s art is presented across the city, revolving around a main theme.

The inaugural edition of the Contemporaine de Nîmes, presented from April 5 to June 23, 2024, is entitled “Une nouvelle jeunesse” [A New Youth] and focuses on today’s youth, its concerns and relationships with preceding generations, through the concepts of heritage and transmission. Artistic direction has been entrusted to the duo Anna Labouze & Keimis Henni.

The 1st Contemporaine de Nîmes programme is centered around  a major exhibition entitled “La Fleur et la Force” [The Flower and the Strength] in reference to the prime of life. Deployed in the form of an itinerary across the city centre, it comprises twelve artistic projects in as many locations: museums, cultural venues, heritage sites, public spaces… Each of them brings together an emerging artist and an established or historic one in an intergenerational pair, as well as a local community involved in the creation. The exhibition layout is divided into five sectors, which can be visited in any order: Gare, Arènes, Chapitre, Carré and Jardins.

As part of the Contemporaine de Nîmes, with a special focus on the performing arts, six special events punctuate the programme, revisiting memories of childhood and youth through an artistic prism. They are divided into three weekends: the opening weekend (April 5-6-7), the intermediate weekend (May 24-25-26) and the closing weekend (June 21-22-23).
