Echoes: Plot Twist

30 Jan 2025 – 02 Feb 2025
Haus der Kunst, Munich

Haus der Kunst presents “Echoes”, the annual live exhibition exploring contemporary media—digital and bodily. The exhibition examines the meanings of live and liveness in today’s digitalised world.

The third edition focuses on language and play. “Plot Twist” investigates communication, the role of human language, and the unpredictable layers added by non-human voices. Like a sound wave reflected from a distant surface, “Echoes” mirrors the year’s key themes. Through music, dance, and dialogue, “Echoes” merges ancient myth with modern technology. Over four days in winter’s darkest period, it invites reflection on eco-fictions, human-machine relations, and other concerns.

“Echoes” opens with a performance by Hanne Lippard, who debuts her new installation “Sour Loop”, created in collaboration with Laurel Halo. This serene work explores the malleability of bodies and words. On Friday, the atmosphere shifts to a hypnotic, contemplative mood, with a late-night release for dance. Saturday offers a “choose your own adventure” experience, culminating in Anansi’s Web’s powerful new production “Dimanche”, exploring Afro-Caribbean music traditions and carnival characters.

On Sunday, Pussy Riot closes “Echoes” with a performance blending music and political commentary, expanding their exhibition “Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia” into a live concert.
With Anansi’s Web (Curtly Thomas & Nelta Kasparian), Hanne Lippard & Laurel Halo, Invernomuto, Layton Lachman, Lucy Liyou, Pavel Milyakov & Martyna Basta, Pussy Riot, Rully Shabara, and Sarah Friend. Curated by Sarah Johanna Theurer, Sarah Miles, and Marlene Mützel, with support from Ilinca Fechete.
