Extraperlo 2021 – a curatorial platform for the unorthodox

February 24, 2021

Founded by Spanish designer Jorge Penadés three years ago, EXTRAPERLO is a curatorial platform for the unorthodox. It sets out to challenge the systems, structures, and codes existing in contemporary design, offering progressive alternative beyond commercial and institutional contexts.

The 2021 edition of EXTRAPERLO is titled Curating Curators , a project which Jorge Penadés co-curated with Milan-based independent curator Maria Cristina Didero.

EXTRAPERLO – Curating Curators  began by bringing together some of the liveliest minds on the international design scene and inviting them to take part in an exhibition focusing on their specific approach to their profession of curating, epitomising the question of what curating actually means.

Participating curators faced only two limitations:

A) the chosen project and materials submitted to Curating Curators  had to fit in one shoebox.
B) their project would be put on sale for a maximum price of 500 Euros.

Participating curators include:

– Tulga Beyerle: Director of Museum of Applied Arts Hamburg (AU)
– Felix Burrichter: Director of Pin Up Magazine, New York (USA)
– Libby Sellers: Independent curator and design historian (UK)
– Aric Chen: Director of Design Miami/Basel and Tongji University professor (PRC)
– Jane Withers: Independent curator and consultant (UK)
– Daniel Charny: Founder of From Now On, curator and educator (UK)
– Ana Domínguez Siemens: Independent design curator and journalist (SP)
– Brent Dzekciorius: Curator and founder of Dzek (USA)
– Matylda Krzykowski: Independent curator and educator (PL)
– Jonathan Olivares: Designer and curator (USA)
– Anne-Laure Pingreoun: Curator and consultant (FR)
– Annalisa Rosso: Curator and journalist (IT)
– Jana Scholze: Curator and professor at Kingston University (UK)
– Robert Stadler: Designer and curator (AU)

The exhibition EXTRAPERLO – Curating Curators opened on February 18th 2021, on the occasion of the Madrid Design Festival, and runs until mid-March.
