The film “Quercus” (2020) will be online, available to the digital audience, from Tuesday, March 24 through Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Produced by the artistic duo Formafantasma, the film was shooted with the so-called LIDAR technology, a form of scanning and recording of large areas through laser tools. In this case, the duo decided to map an oak forest in Virginia to investigate the inextricable relationship between human species and trees.

The piece has been presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Formafantasma: Cambio”, inaugurated at Serpentine Galleries on March 4, 2020, and now temporarily closed in response to the spread of coronavirus. The exhibition presents films, objects, and artifacts, such as wood samples from institutions around the world, specially designed furniture, maps, and more. Through this presentation, the Amsterdam-based Italian duo aims to rethink our connection with trees and to bring forward the crucial subject, in these days, of sustainable design.

The online screening of the film is the result of the collaboration between Serpentine Galleries and e-flux and will be the first in a series of digital films, videos, and live events, to come in the next weeks.
